Construction of the mosque started in 1994 with funds donated allocated Turkish Republic. Mosque named after the Ottoman sultan Ertugrul became one of the first mosques in Ashgabat, which opened in 1998. Architecture of the mosque is not typical for Central Asia, includes four minarets and has a typical Turkish (Ottoman) style - a mix of Byzantine and Islamic architecture. Appearance is similar to the Blue Mosque in Istanbul.
Mosque of Ertugrul Gazi is considered one of the most beautiful and largest mosque in Ashgabat. In the mosque is located apparatus of the Muftiate of Turkmenistan and is the spiritual center of the faithful.
